I am a huge admirer of Game Masters that create whole Worlds and fill them with People. Living them instead of just mentioning their Names and populating them with random NPCs. Now, I am not ready to create a whole World from Scratch, but why don’t we start with a small Town? I already know the Name of it. And I will show you, what I prepared before moving into my Plan of Attack.
Welcome to Silver Gardens
Here is my Map of the Town, and I created 13 Points of Interest in this Map, that we can now explore.
We have the Town Square with the Bakery, Grocery, Library, Tavern, and the All or Nothing Shop. Next to it is the Farmer. The Church, Academy, and Inn are the Glimmergate District. Then we have the Police Station, the Fire Station, and the Mayor in the Brightspire Ward and we do have a Noble that is living here in this Town.
Now I took the Location Crafter Region Sheet from the Mythic Creators and I put down all 13 Locations twice. So I would have 1 Location for every Dice Roll. During my Adventure in Silver Gardens, I will roll randomly on this Table to see where it will lead us. Encounters we will fill in with the People in Town and the Objects I will put down pending Threads I would like to keep. I am not sure, how this will work out so, maybe Ideas will change. If you would like to help me with this, throw your suggestions in the Comments, and let’s fill up a small Town.
At the End of this Post, I will keep a List of all the Resources I used for this Adventure. At the moment I have the Adventure Crafter by Tana Pigeon next to me. That’s how we will determine Threads and Characters. Then for creating the Characters, I will use the Table Fables by Madeline Hale. So, because the List is empty, I am not going to Roll the normal Adventure Crafter but start with Generating a Random Person for our Town. First, let’s Roll a d100 and see what House we will fill in.
30 – The Library… Ok. Let’s start with a Librarian.
01 – Ada – 39 – Gauche
Human, d4 – 3 Female – Young Adult, 22 YO
Traits – 02 – Authoritative – 87 – Stoic – 27 – Foolhardy
Quirks: 71 – The player has offended a coven of witches – Not what I was expecting… 🙂
Favorite Colour – Light yellow-green.
Now let’s generate a Past for our Ada. Parents – 1d4 2 – Both of Cha’s parents are dead.
Place of Birth – 1d8 8 – A temple or monastery – Childhood: 1d6 3 – The Cha was raised in an abusive environment.
Siblings – 9 – 1d4 siblings 3 Siblings. (Are they still in Town? 50/50 Chance (2 are Still living here 1 is away) So let’s roll 2 d100 and see what Location we get, and the owners there will be her siblings.
Sibling 1: 51 – The Tavern. and Sibling 2: 57 – Noble. (So, Sibling Nr. 2 can’t be the Noble itself, but maybe works there or is married to the Noble. We will find out more as we go along.)
Romantic Status 1d4 1 – Single.
Appearance Generator
Avarage – Heavy-set. Amber Eyes, Flat Nose, golden blond Hair
Pocket Filler – d20 14 – Tobacco in a small fold of paper. Mundane Treasure d100 83 – A clay cylinder covered in an unknown script. 16 – A simple box that, when opened, plays an acoustic version of a popular bard song.
I want to give her a Magic Item. Maybe she found it behind a Book once. 76 – A fancy, slightly tarnished shovel. This peculiar weapon lets out a deafeningly loud bell gong whenever something is struck.
In the Table Fables there is a Chapter with Books. So I want her to have a favorite Book. d100 92 – A wizard’s journal. Reading any portion of this book aloud causes a random magical effect.
So, using her Information, let’s think about the Adventure Crafter. I am going to keep them in that Order for now. Maybe rearrange them if needed along the Line. In the Adventure Crafter, you are supposed to add your Characters to the List, every time they get invoked. But, I don’t think, I will do this at the moment, because I don’t have a main character, but I want to create the Town. Let’s see where that leads us. Meaning, that if the Roll for the Character is most logical and we roll the Bakery, I will use this as the Character of the Baker, even, if we have not created them already. But let’s see where we land.
So, let’s create our first 5 Plotpoints for Ada.
Red – 78 – Mystery – An Improbable Crime
Yellow – 15 – Social – None
Green – 53 – Social – A group is in Trouble
Blue – 65 – Social – Government
White – 97 – Social – Meta
PLOT POINTS | CHARACTERS INVOKED |
An improbable Crime – This TP involves a crime that seems either improbable or impossible to have occurred.
None | |
A group is in Trouble – A group, such as a community is in trouble in this PP. The group or community is facing a difficulty
Government – This TP involves the government in some way. | New Mayor |
Meta – 69 – Character Downgrade – A Cha becomes less important. | Old Mayor |
It was so hot in the Town Hall, that was also working as the Mayor’s Office. Ada was just coming from a Town Meeting there. The Town was in Trouble after a Series of Break-ins. The Police can’t seem to find out who’s behind it. The Whole Town is looking for some answers and nobody seems to find them.
Our old Mayor was getting too old for this and decided to step down. So we came together and voted for a new Mayor just minutes ago.
Ada saw that something wasn’t right with the Library, the minute she walked up the stairs and crossed the corner of the bakery. The Door, that she definitely closed was open. Before she took herself in danger, she ran back down to see if she could find the Chief of Police.
1 or 3 female, 2 or 4 male – 4 – Male – Chief Ett Able was talking to our new Mayor
Same 1 – Female – Mayor Rhye Den
Ada decided to butt in and told them that someone broke into the library and might still be there. They all ran back to her little Heaven. Chief Able was going in first. After a moment he came back out and said, that there was no one in there and that Ada could go back in. She needed to tell him if something was missing.
So, is there something missing? It was a Break in so, I would say most likely. So let’s say 1-75 it’s a Yes and 76-100 it’s a no. – 21 – Yes they have stolen the money she had in the Register. Let’s just roll a d100 and say that was the amount they took. Ada had around 20 Gold Pieces, 11 Silver, and up to 74 Copper inside.
Did they take anything else? 50/50 Chance – 16 – Yes, something was missing. Ada was looking around and saw, that one of her more expensive Books on Display was missing. This was not just a Library, but a Book Shop as well. Chief Able asks what Book it was – 82 – A Tale for Two a Magical Book by an unknown author. The writing in this book changes rapidly. The punctuation and spacing remain, but the letters constantly change. Ada wanted 21 Gold Pieces for it. She offended a coven of witches while getting this book. Whatever that means she did not specify.
Anything else? 1-20 Yes, +21 No – 65 – It did not look like.
Scene 2
I want to role 3 d100 and see what we will get from the List above.
16 for the Location: Inn – The Silver Treasure Inn
43 Character is New
82 for Plotline – logical.
Ok. let’s create a new Inn Keeper with the Table Fables by Madeline Hale.
18 – Dogmora – 79- Talmar
Human, d4 – 3 Female – 66 YO
Traits – 82 – Smooth – 88 – Strong-Willed – 46 – Maternal
Quirks: 97 – The Character is missing 1 Arm or 1 Leg. Let’s say, a leg, but no one knows this.
Favorite Colour – Light green-blue.
Now let’s generate a Past for our Dogmora. Parents – 1d4 3 – The Character’s mother is dead, but their father is alive.
Place of Birth – 1d8 2 – A foreign land. – Childhood: 1d6 3 – The Cha was raised in an abusive environment.
Siblings – 5 – Single Child – Does she has Contact to her Father? 50/50 37 – Yes.
Romantic Status 1d4 1 – Single.
Appearance Generator
Tall – Heavy-set. Green Eyes, Flat Nose, gray Hair
So for Plotline, we rolled Logical. The only Point we have is – Who is working on the Break-ins. So let’s roll 5 d100 to see our new Adventure Points.
Red – 58 – Social – The Leader
Yellow – 09 – Social – None
Green – 43 – Social – A common Social Gathering
Blue – 54 – Personal – Doing the right thing
White – 91 – Social – Confrontation
PLOT POINTS | CHARACTERS INVOKED |
The Leader – This TP involves the leader of someone or some organization | Cha – 68 – logical – Mr. Winterborn |
None | |
common social Gathering – This TP involves a social gathering. This can be any gathering of people, generally for a common purpose.
Doing the right thing – A cha who is acting in bad faith in some way has a change of heart and decides to do the right thing. | Cha – 03 – Ada Gauche |
Confrontation – This TP involves Cha meeting in a confrontation that may turn physical if things don’t go well. | Cha – 54 – New – Mr. Winterborn |
Ok, so here is how I would write this Scene – Dogmora was sitting behind her Counter in the Entrence of her Inn. All in All her Inn had d20 – 13 Rooms. This Time of Year, her Inn was full, thanks to a Traveling Group that arrived yesterday. They had 10 Rooms alone for 2 Nights. The Leader of the Group, Mr. Henry Winterborn –
I would like to try out the Swift NPC Builder, that I just Downloaded from DriveThruRPG. Here is a link to it, if you are intrested as well. Swift NPC Builder
They are 4. Wild Person – 1,3 – Fisherman / 1,3 again – Pale Person, / 5,5 Bright Attire, / 3,6 Hunting Skills / 6,3 Overwhelmed – Emotional State / 5,5 False Identity Secret / 6,1 Shruging in Response
Let’s give him 2 Items – 1,2 + 2,2 – Empty Vial and Mirror – And 2 Traits Flaw, 1,1 – Arrogance Positive, 4,3 Compassionate
is aproaching the Desk in a fast and worried Pace. They heard about the Robberys and are scared, that they will get robbed as well. Ada trys to calm him down, but he Insists on leaving as soon as possible. Dogmora trys again to calm him down. He wants all the money back for the Rooms they stay in and they want to leave. But they already stayed 1 Night, so Ada would only give him back have of the Money, but actually dont want to give up anything at all. She needs that Money for the Winter. She trys to persue him to stay another Night. She will give him back 2 of the 10 Gold Let’s say Dogmora has a +2 to Persuation and has to make a DC 16 Check. 12+2 – Fail… So Mr. Winterborn does not want to stay another Night longer and insists on his Money back. So Dogmora calls Chief Able to come and help her. Upon arriving of the Chief, Dogmora and Mr. Winterbore are in a huge fight over the Money. People from the Group start gatering in the Foyer. Ok, so let me roll 3 d20.
Green is for Dogmora, Blue is for Chief Able and White is for Mr. Winterborn. Who ever gets the Highest Number wins this Fight. I just see, that this is quite unfair because, we have 2 against 1. So let’s say we also roll a yellow Die that represents the other People of the groupe.
Mr. Winterborn 14
Chief Able 13
Group 10
And Dogmora only has 6
Dogmora is sad but gives up. She gives them back the money and tells them to leave in the next 10 Minutes or esle they are Tresspassing and she gets them arrested.
After they left, she decides to go to her Friend Ada to the Library. She tells her what happend and Ada gets really angry. She looks through her Books. When asking her what she was looking for, she tells Dogmora that she has a Spell book and that she will try something out on Mr. Winterborn. Dogmora laughs and tells her to stop and that it is Ok. Ada agrees, but will decide later, if she does not want to try something without Dogmora knowing about it.
