Lost City of Crystalvale – Creating a Solo Adventure Game

I want to try the new Book I just got from Amazon. It’s the Book of Random Tables Quests – Written by Matt Davids.

You will find a lot of different Adventure Hooks in different Settings in this Book. So let’s see how this works.

(After I finished this Adventure I wrote up, all the Rules of the Game and put out a PDF on DriveThruRPG. Find the Link to the Free PDF here)

Setup

I flipped through the Book and landed on Lost Cities. There are 100 different Lost Cities in this Book. Now let’s roll a d100 and see what City we will get.

10 – Vilne: The Cold City. Tales differ wildly, yet they agree that the city is made completely from ice.

Great, I like the Prompt – I will just change the Name to Crystalvale.

I am using my Fighter Caracter – Level 1 Nykai Jackard and the Mythic GME for this Adventure.

Here is the normal Fate Chart Table, we are going to use.

I was looking through my Components Collection and I was looking to find some white and blue Pieces, because of the Ice Theme and that is what I found and came up with. The blue Stone in the Corner is our Starting Point, the Rest of the Game I will tell you as seen as we get into the Story.

Nykai arrived with the 11 o’clock Train far North. As he was leaving the Train, a cold breeze surrounded him. He put his Winter Coat a bit closer around his Body.

“Mr. Jackard. Juhuu, Mr. Jackard.” A man was waving at him from a Distance.

“Professor Fisher?”

“Yes, it is I, Professor Fisher. Welcome to Icehaven. You’re Travels were good, yes?”

“Fine. Can we move somewhere warmer?”

“Sure, sure.” He pushed me from the train station into the Next Tavern. A Fireplace was lit and I threw my Backpack in a corner, worming my Hands on the open flame.

“My dear, Mr. Jackard.”

“Call me Nykai.”

“Then you must call me Wilbur. I was asking you up here because I think I am close to finding out a century-old Mystery. But, I am not one to adventure. So that is why you are here. Did you ever hear from the Lost City of Crystelvale?”

  • Did we hear about the Lost City? Let’s go to the Table and let’s start with a Chaos Factor of 5 and a 50/50 Chance of knowing it. So 10/50/91 – 31 – Yes, we know about the Lost City.

“Yes, of course, Who has not heard about it.”

“Exactly my friend. So, here is the Deal. Find this City. It must be somewhere around Icehaven up North. You will get a lot of money from me. Try to find all of the Ice Runes. They are scattered around and are worth quite a lot. I will give you up to 4 Gold per Rune or maybe sometimes you can find some Healing Berrys next to them. Are you expecting the challenge? You can go down in History.”

  • Do we accept? Let’s stay on Chaos Factor 5 and say Nearly Certain – Would not be much of a story, if we would roll a no… So 18 – 90 – 99 – and we rolled 81. Well, that was close.

“Ok, you got me. I am interested. I will start in the morning.”

“Yes, I knew I could count on you. Well, I don’t want to take any more of your precious time. I have a Room for you upstairs. I hope you find it and stay safe.

  • So, here are a few rules. Every day, we will move into a different square and we will roll to see if we can find the City, If the City is even here. So how about this? We will roll a d100. 1-83 The City is not here. 84-97 the City could be in this Square and 98-100 the City is definitely in the Square.
  • For today we found a Rune – Let’s say the Doctor gave it to us, to let us see what they are looking like. So let’s roll the dice and see how much they are worth. For ease of Gameplay, I will get rid of the Runes and take the money instead.
  • And then let’s move up North.

Let’s roll some Dice. – DAY 1

  • City Check: 44 – No City.
  • Rune Check: 1 Coin
  • Is there a Monster in this Spot: d20 50/50 Chance: Natural 20 – A Monster.

Fighting the Monster – I was looking up Monsters on dndbeyond.com and set a Filter for Arctic – Basic Rules – I then took the easiest Monster on the list. This will be our starting Monster a Commoner. He has an AC of 10 and 4 HP.

Initiative Nykai +3 d20 17 = 20

Commoner +2 d20 10 = 12.

I used the Great Sword and got a 9+4 = 13 and hit him with 2d6 = 8 Points of Damage. Giving me 10 xP towards leveling up.

Is there anything else to find here? CF 6 – 50/50 Chance – 13 / 65 / 94 – 92 – Almost a No and…

So we take a short rest and move one.

After defeating a Commoner who attacked me, I found the Rune, this time it was only 1 Gold and sadly I did not find the City today. It would be pretty impressive if I had.

DAY 2:

We are heading East.

City-Check: 06 – defenetly not in this part.

The Rune got us 4 Gold

And we do get a Monster with 16: This time it is a Owl – AC 11 and 1 HP.

Rolling for Initiative – Nykai 11+3 – 14 and Owl 3+1 – 4.

Rolling a 15 +4 with my Greatsword i don’t even roll for Damage. And getting 10 XP for my Level 1 Fighter.

Is there anything else to find here? – CF 6 50/50 Chance 13 / 65 / 94 – 93 Wow. there really is only snow and nothing more up here.

Where to go next. After defeating the Owl and take a long rest, I decided to head back south again.

DAY 3

  • City-Check – 04 WOW!!! Sometimes the Dice are funny…
  • I rolled a H on the dice. So instead of Money, I will get Healing Berrys – Restoring 3 HP everytime you eat one. I think these are mentioned in the Solo Adventure Toolkit. Lets roll a d4 to see how many we could find. 1 – of course.
  • And a Monster, that was some bad luck on the rolls. This time it is a Tribal Warrior. AC of 12 and 11 HP.

How about some Initiative?

Nykai – 2+3 = 5

Tribal Warrior Nat 1 + 0 = 1

Nothing happened in the first round, but I rolled a Natural 20 in the second round.

2d6 + 2 – I rolled a 5+3 and +2 is 10. The Warrior has 1 HP left. After that, she hit me also with 5 HP.

Next round, I rolled 9+4 = 13 to the AC of 12 with 1 HP remaining. I WIN (did not roll for damage.) + 25 to XP

Anything else, we found, while we were out there? CF 6, no I think 7 now, because we lost HP. So CF 7 and 50/50 Chance is 15 / 75 / 96 – 72 – Yes, we found something.

I am going to use the Deck of many things and found the Warrior upside down.

An unsubtle work of art. I then took out the Dungeon Master Guide, and on Page 134 I found 25 GP Art Objects. Rolling a d10 we get – 4 – Cloth-of-gold vestments worth 25 GP – I put that in the Inventory.

After taking a long rest, restoring all my Hitpoints back to 12 it was time to head East.

DAY 4

  • City-Check – 74 – Close, but no City.
  • I rolled a H on the Rune dice again. So instead of Money, I will get Healing Berrys – Restoring 3 HP everytime you eat one. I think these are mentioned in the Solo Adventure Toolkit. Lets roll a d4 to see how many we could find. 2
  • And 3 – no Monster this turn.

Did we find anything else? I realized way into the game, that I was using the Chaos Factor wrong. So instead, I am going to stay at the 50/50 Rule for this Roll from now on. 1-50 Yes, we will find something. 51-100 No, there is nothing.

So rolling: 89 – No, there is nothing.

So let’s move East on more time to go to the corner.

DAY 5

  • City-Check – 23 – Yeah, not even close.
  • I rolled a H on the Rune dice again. d4 – 3 we found 3 Healing Berries.
  • And 3 – no Monster again this turn.

Healing Berries again, and no Monster. I was looking around. Did I find anything else?

50/50 Y/N – 29 – Yes we found something.

Deck of many Things: Giant – Upright: A treasure made by Giants, or one of great sentimental value.

Looking though the Dungeon Master Guide I found a Belt of Giant Strenght. Thematicly the Belt would come from a Frost Giant – So why don’t we put that on.

That was an amazing Find. So now whe have a Strengh of 23 and +6 to our Rolls.

So let’s head up North.

DAY 6

  • City-Check – 34 – Nope!
  • I rolled a 2 on the Rune, so let’s grab 2 Coins.
  • And 18 – Yes, definitely a Monster. 3 – no Monster again this turn.

Rolling some Initiative.

Nykai – 8+3 = 11

Bandit 4+1 = 5

Thanks to the Belt, I have a + 8 to my Attak-Role – 12+8 for his AC of 12 – I will hit him with – 1+4+6 = 11 and I killed the Bandit in 1 Single swipe of the Greatsword. Which will give me 25 XP.

Anything else in this Place? 50/50 Y/N – 76 – No, we did not find anything.

There was nothing more in this Aera – It is time to head back west. We are already One week into the Game.

DAY 7

  • City-Check – 85 – OKAY, finally a hint of the Lost City. I will mark this Square with a X so, we will remember this
  • I rolled a 1 on the Rune, so let’s grab 1 Coin.
  • And 2 – Defenitly no monster this turn.

Is there something else in this Aera?

50/50 Y/N – 36 – Yes, we found something. Let’s head over to the Deck of Many things.

The Ruin – Right Side up:

Treasure: A treasure that is broken or in disrepair.

Ok, let’s say we found a Sword, but it is Broken. Maybe someone in the Town can fix it. I put it in my Backpack and we move North.

DAY 8

  • City-Check – 64 – No City in this Space.
  • I rolled a 4 on the Rune, so let’s grab 4 Coins.
  • And 16 – will get us a Blood Hawk for Combat.

Initiative is getting rolled.

Nykai 7+3 = 10

The Hawk has 11+2 = 13. So the Hawk will start the Fight. I only rolled a 4+his 4 is 8. My AC is 14. So he misses.

We rolled 9+8 = 17 so we defenetly will hit. 2d6+6 – I rolled 6+5+6 = 17 Hitpoints against his 7 – We will ajust the XP by 25.

Let’s have a look around – Anything other than this damn Ice?

50/50 Y/N – 86 – Oh no… I wish I would roll so high for the City… And on this note, let’s head East to find it.

DAY 9

  • City-Check – 84 – Yes, it is a Hint and will get another X. I have not decided how we ill end this, if we did not find the City until the End. It will apear on one of the Xs for sure, but I don’t know yet how to decid on which one.
  • I rolled a Healing Berry and a 3 on a d4 – Will put this into our Inventory.
  • And 10 – Almost got a new Encounter.

Placed the X on the Ground in this Spot. Did I find anything at all?

50/50 Y/N – Of course, I rolled a 51. So no let’s head far North.

DAY 10

  • City-Check – 42 – No City.
  • I rolled a 1 for the Runes.
  • And 14 – A Kobold will Attack us. AC of 12 and 5 HP

Initiative is getting loaded.

Nykai – 12+3=15

And the Kobolt 14+2=16 – I missed it by 1.

18+4 he will defenetly hit me with his Dagger for 4 Points of Damage

I rolled a 9 again +8 defenetly higher than his AC for 3+6+6 and he is gone. But I need a Long Rest after that. Did not use any Berries for healing though.

Sooo, do we find anything else?

50/50 Y/N – 78 – No, nothing around these parts. Let’s head West on the Top of the Aera.

DAY 11

  • City-Check – 74 – Close, but no City.
  • I rolled another 1 for the Runes. – We now have 26 Gold Pieces in our Bag.
  • And 9 – So, no Monster.

As usual, let’s hope, we can find something.

50/50 Y/N – 89 – Ohh no. Nothing.

After a long Day of traveling, sadly no sign of the Lost City. I found another small Rune and no Monster attacked me. I want to stay on this Path and move foreward.

DAY 12

  • City-Check – 71 – Again so close. But not.
  • I rolled a 3 for the Runes. – I will gladly take that, Thank you.
  • And 4 – Defenetly no Monster. I think we are to much up North to come across some Monsters.

Did we find anything else?

50/50 Y/N – 83 – No, but I would have loved this Role on the City Check…

DAY 13

  • City-Check – 32 – This is great….
  • I rolled 4 Healing Berrys. Getting me up to 13.
  • And 14 to get an Encounter. We are now on the Large Owl on the Monster List. AC of 12 but 19 HP. See me roll some low hits, now that there are a lot of HP on the Table…

Let’s role some Initative

Nykai – Nat 20 + 3 =23

Large Owl – 13 + 2 = 15

First Role – 15+8 = 23 – AC of 12 – HIT. 4+3+6 = 13 Points of Damage – leaving him with 6 HP – He rolled a 3+3 = 6 – Lower than my AC.

I rolled only a 4 but I have a +8 so 12 which means it hits him. 6+4+6 = 16 and he is gone. That was our first 1/4 monster, giving us 50 XP.

And I hope we can find something for future Adventures.

50/50 Y/N – 05 – We do find something.

We found the Puzzle in the Deck of Many Things – the Right side up, which means: A treasure whose function or value isn’t immediately apparent. Phu, what could this be? A Treasure Box maybe, with a Puzzle to open it.

Can we open the Box? Let’s look at our Inteligence of 11 so a +0. I give the Box a DC of 16 to see if we can open the Box now or have to wait until later.

DC 16 – Inteligence +0 – We rolled a 15… Great, just great. But, it is not lost. Let me put the Box into the Backback and we can try again tomorrow. – Speaking about Tomorrow…

What a eventful Day. I are almoste done adventuring. I am so close of finding this City. So it is time to move back South.

DAY 14

  • City-Check – 16 – Ooh no no no….
  • I rolled 2 Gold for the Runes.
  • And no monster with a 6 on the Dice.
  • Special Role – Can we open up the Puzzle Box. DC 16 – 7 – No no

I hope to find something at least

50/50 Y/N – 58 – Not my Day for Roling Dice…

DAY 15 – our last day.

  • City-Check – 87 – Ok, 1 more X for a Hint.
  • I rolled 3 Gold for the Runes.
  • And no more monster with a 10.
  • Special Role – Can we open up the Puzzle Box. DC 16 – 9 – Oh no

Do we find anything on our last Field.

50/50 Y/N – 05 – Yes the last Treasure will be: The SUN – Right Side up: A valuable religious object devotet to good, or a holy or protective magic item – So I put in a Holy Simbol Amulet worth 50 Gold Coins in our Equipment.

So, on my last Day I found a Amulet – looked expensive. I will hang it around, so I wont lose it.

Endgame – Finding the Lost City of Crystalvale

I decided on a way to Work this out. So now we have 3 differnt Spots, where the Lost City could be, based on our Roles between 84 – 97.

I am going to Roll a d4. The one on the left is Nr. 1, in the middle we have Nr. 2 and on the right is Nr. 3. If we Role a 4, the City will apear in the middle Spot.

Before rolling, I will now Bet on which Number the Dice will fall and if I guessed so correctly, I will get 1 Platnum.

Can you tell me in the Comments, what Number you would have picked?

I will say Number 2 the Middle X.

So, let’s roll… And we have a 3!

And here she is the Lost city of Crystalvale.

Heading back Home

After a long journey home, we arrived in Icehaven where the dear Professor waited for us.

“Thank god, you are still alive, you got me worried there for a minute.”

“Well, I think I am going to get sick from all of the Ice, but I found your City. It is North-East on the Edge. Here is a Map, I drew for you.”

Before he could take the Map, I took it back. “I believe we had an arrangement?”

“Ah, yes. Here, 4 Platnum for the Map?”

I grabbed the Coins and he grabbed the Map and with that I was leaving Icehaven and the Professor behind on the next Train South.
